sean procyk is an artist, architect and playground designer who builds site-specific sculpture, installations and architectural space. His projects respond to their regional context with a particular focus on the intersections of landscape, community and ecology. When creating artwork sean engages with local industries to gain insight about how people's lifestyles and livelihoods are connected to place. His works speak to the struggle of living autonomously within the current socio-economic climate in North America. Under capitalism he feels that practices of self reliant learning can be sites of resistance to complacent and dependent behaviors. This is why he creates art.
sean draws upon the practices of land art and multimedia installation to create experiences that engage with the senses. He integrates sound and light technologies with the built environment to challenge our intrinsically spatial way of thinking about space. His works have been exhibited at Hamilton Artists Inc. (Hamilton), Latitude 53 (Edmonton), Stride Contemporary Art Gallery (Calgary), Elemental Festival (Kagawong), Convergence Conference on Art and Technology (Banff) and Nuit Blanche (Toronto). He holds a degree in Fine Arts from McMaster University, a Bachelor of Architecture from Carleton University and a Master’s of Fine Arts from OCAD University. sean is a settler Canadian artist with Polish, Irish and Swedish ancestry. He lives and practices on the occupied lands of the Anishinabek and Haudenosauneega. The region covered under Treaty No. 3 of the Upper Canada Treaties is his place of birth. |
